  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • 9-inch round or square cake pan
  • Cooling rack
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom to taste

Instructions

Step 1 – Preheat and Prepare the Pan

  • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch baking pan with butter or oil, then lightly dust it with flour or line it with parchment paper so the cake doesn’t stick.

Step 2 – Cream the Butter and Sugar

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with the sugar until the mixture is pale and fluffy, which usually takes 2–3 minutes. This helps make the cake light and tender.

Step 3 – Add the Eggs and Flavors

  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each one. Then mix in the almond extract, vanilla extract, and ground cardamom.

Step 4 – Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter-egg mixture, alternating with milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Stir just until everything is combined don’t over mix.

Step 5 – Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

Step 6 – Cool and Enjoy

  • Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, and then move it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy as a dessert, breakfast treat, or with a cup of coffee or tea.

Notes

Notes: Make sure the eggs and butter are at room temperature for a smoother batter. Cardamom and almond extract are optional but give the cake its authentic Danish flavor. The cake can be served warm or at room temperature with tea or coffee.
